Was wäre, wenn Materialien mehr tun könnten, als nur die Umweltbelastung zu verringern?

Ein neues Design namens BioScales hängt an einer Wand und sieht aus wie eine abstrakte Skulptur. Es soll aber auch CO2 und Schmutz aus der Luft abfangen und später kompostiert werden, um Kohlenstoff in den Boden zurückzuführen.

Das Design, Finalist für den Lexus Design Award 2020, wurde von der in Los Angeles ansässigen Firma Sutherlin Santo entwickelt. „Als wir in der Innenstadt lebten, uns um die Luftqualität hier und die Folgen der Waldbrände kümmerten, brachten wir Geräte in unsere Wohnung, um die Luft zu reinigen“, sagt Partner Paul Sutherlin Santo. „Wir haben konzeptionell überlegt, was wir tun können, ohne neue Technologien einzuführen, sondern die vorhandene Oberfläche zu nutzen.“

Es ist Teil eines größeren Projekts namens Biocraft, an dem das Studio arbeitet. Ziel ist es, Kunststoff auf Erdölbasis durch Biopolymere zu ersetzen, die zusätzliche Funktionen haben. Als Architekturstudent dachte Partner Garrett Sutherlin Santo immer wieder über das Ausmaß des Plastikmülls nach, der durch die Herstellung von Architekturmodellen entsteht. Als sein Studio begannen die Designer mit neuen biologisch abbaubaren Polymergelen zu experimentieren, die für den 3D-Druck verwendet und dann kompostiert werden konnten. (Im Gegensatz zu vielen kompostierbaren Kunststoffen kann das Material in einem Garten kompostiert werden. Theoretisch wäre es sogar essbar, wenn die Designer dies auch nicht empfehlen)

Als sie mit der Entwicklung des Materials begannen und es optimierten, um die Deckkraft und die Funktionsweise von 3D-Druckern zu steuern, überlegten sie, wie sie mehr damit anfangen könnten. „Wir haben uns gefragt, ob es möglich ist, eine Sekundärschicht oder eine zusätzliche Leistung über die Struktur hinaus einzubetten – und ob wir in diesem Fall die Luft reinigen können oder nicht“, sagt er. Das Material enthält Aktivkohle, die bereits häufig in Luftfiltern verwendet wird. Da es in jede Form 3D-gedruckt werden kann, sind die Fliesen nur eine mögliche Verwendung des Materials. Die Designer beabsichtigen, es als Ersatz für viele Artikel zu verwenden, die üblicherweise aus Kunststoff hergestellt werden, wie z. B. Verpackungen.

Das Design befindet sich noch in einem frühen Stadium und die Designer haben noch nicht ganz berechnet, welche Auswirkungen es auf die Luftqualität haben könnte. Um einen Einfluss auf CO2 zu haben, müsste es natürlich in großem Umfang eingesetzt werden − und die Installation von BioScale-Fliesen an den Außenwänden eines großen Gebäudes würde beispielsweise einige logistische Herausforderungen hinsichtlich des Entfernens und Ersetzens der Fliesen darstellen, die mit Smog gefüllt werden.

Trotzdem ist es ein interessantes Experiment: Was wäre, wenn mehr Materialien nicht nur ihre eigene Umweltbelastung verringern, sondern auch aktiv versuchen würden, weiter zu gehen? „Da wir uns in den nächsten Jahrzehnten mit dem Umweltzustand befassen, ist es meiner Meinung nach sehr wichtig, dass die Materialien selbst mit der gleichen Sorgfalt entworfen werden wie die Produkte, auf die sie angewendet werden.“ sagt Garett Sutherlin Santo.
