Damit können C02-Emissionen gewinnbringend abgeschieden werden, indem das Gas zu etwas mineralisiert wird, das im Wesentlichen Backpulver ist.
Die resultierenden festen Carbonate und Bicarbonate sind ideal für die sichere Lagerung auf Deponien und können zur Verwendung in Produkten wie Backpulver, Salzsäure und Kalkstein an die chemische Industrie verkauft werden. Darüber hinaus bedeutet die feste Speicherung von CO2, dass kein Pipeline-Transport erforderlich ist, wodurch das Risiko einer Injektion oder erneuten Freisetzung in die Atmosphäre beseitigt wird.
Das erste groß angelegte Projekt von Skyonic integriert die SkyMine-Technologie in eine bestehende Zementherstellungsanlage, um jährlich schätzungsweise 300.000 Tonnen Kohlendioxid oder 15 Prozent der Emissionen abzufangen. Diese ähneln dem Kalkstein oder der Kreide, derselben geologischen Formation, die einem Großteil des Himalaya, den Klippen von Dover in England sowie Teilen des Südostens der USA zugrunde liegt. Das Mineral kann dann verarbeitet werden, um lebensmitteltaugliches Bikarbonat herzustellen, das bereits in der Vieh- und Lebensmittelindustrie verwendet wird.
