Nach wie vor spricht die ganze Welt über das Corona Virus. Scheinbar erkrankt niemand mehr an etwas Anderem. „Aber auch die übrigen Erkrankungen müssen beachtet und behandelt werden!“, betont Ekkehard Büchler, Obmann der Selbsthilfe Prostatakrebs Österreich, anlässlich des Europäischen Prostatakrebs Tags 2020 / European Prostatecancer Awareness Day (EPAD), der am 15. September abgehalten wird.
Zu diesem Anlass lud die Selbsthilfe Prostatakrebs gemeinsam mit dem Bundesverband Selbsthilfe Österreich (BVSHOE) zur Online-PK, um die Awareness bei Männern deutlich zu steigern. Und das aus gutem Grund. Denn laut einer aktuellen Umfrage der European Association of Urology (EAU) ist das Wissen von Männern um diesen häufigsten Krebs des männlichen Geschlechts gelinde gesagt bescheiden.
Grundlegende Unwissenheit
So gehen etwa 54% der befragten davon aus, dass auch Frauen eine Prostata haben. 40% der Befragten konnten nicht eindeutig erklären, was ein Urologe tut. 10% gaben an, noch nie von einem Urologen gehört zu haben und fast 15% glauben, dass ein Urologe Störungen des Skelett-, Nerven- oder Kreislaufsystems behandelt. Drei Viertel der Männer haben zudem nur begrenzte Kenntnisse über die Symptome des Prostatakrebses. „Die Ergebnisse unserer jüngsten Umfrage zeigen deutlich, dass die Menschen schlecht informiert sind, wenn es um urologische Erkrankungen geht. Vor allem Männer verfügen über weniger Wissen als Frauen und verschließen die Augen vor Symptomen und Frühdiagnose“, kommentiert Prof. Hein Van Poppel, Urologe und stellvertretender Generalsekretär der EAU.
„Rund 5.200 Männer werden in Österreich jährlich diagnostiziert; das sind 14 Patienten täglich. Etwa 1.200 davon sterben pro Jahr an Prostatakrebs und ca. 65.000 leben damit (die Zahlen wurden vom Ludwig Boltzmann Institut applied diagnostics für das Projekt PATIO erhoben)“, nennt Büchler ein paar wichtige Fakten. „Mit ihren Angehörigen und engen Freunden reden wir hier über 500.000 Menschen, die in Österreich betroffen sind. In ganz Europa sind es rund 450.000 Diagnosen und etwa 92.000 Todesfällen pro Jahr.
Forderung der Selbsthilfe Prostatakrebs
„Prostatakrebs ist nach wie vor ein Tabuthema, umgeben von vielen Mythen und Halbwahrheiten“, führt der Obmann der Selbsthilfe Prostatakrebs aus. „Halten wir uns an die Tatsachen und das gesicherte Wissen. Es könnte so viel Leid und auch finanzielle Mittel gespart werden!“ Aus diesem Grund fordert Büchler vor allem eines: „Prostatakrebs muss in die gesundheitlichen Vorsorgeuntersuchungen aufgenommen werden – genauso wie das Brust-, Darm- und Gebärmutterhalskrebs schon sind! Denn: Prostatakrebs ist NUR im Anfangsstadium heilbar! In diesem Stadium gibt es KEINE Beschwerden.“ Voraussetzung für eine Frühdiagnose urologischer Erkrankungen ist aber auch ein entsprechendes Symptombewusstsein unter den Männern.
Die Erfolgsgeschichte des PSA
Shahrokh F. Shariat, M.D., Vorstand der Universitäts-Klinik für Urologie am AKH Wien, stößt in dasselbe Horn und schließt sich dieser Forderung der Selbsthilfe Prostatakrebs an: „Bei 1 von 9 Männern wird irgendwann im Laufe seines Lebens Prostatakrebs diagnostiziert. Jene Männer, die überlebt haben, taten dies, weil sie regelmäßig auf Prostatakrebs untersucht wurden. Der Krebs wurde rechtzeitig gefunden und behandelt, und sie konnten wieder zurück in ihr gewohntes Leben gehen.“ Auch er ist daher überzeugt: „Alle Männer sollten ein Basis-PSA in ihren Vierzigern bekommen. Dies gilt insbesondere für Männer mit einem höheren Risiko aufgrund ihrer Familiengeschichte. Der PSA-Basiswert zeigt Personen mit einem höheren Risiko an, ob möglicherweise eine genauere Untersuchung notwendig ist.“
Prof Dr. Hendrik Van Poppel sieht das sehr ähnlich: „In der Zeit vor PSA starb einer von drei bis einer von zwei Prostatakrebs Patienten. Das heißt, sie wurden viel zu spät diagnostiziert. Die Behandlungskosten eines früherkannten Mannes liegen unter 12.000 Euro und die Behandlungskosten für die letzten zwei Jahre eines hormonrefraktären Mannes vor seinem Tod betragen 240.000 Euro.“
