Eine ehrgeizige neue Analyse der Wälder der Welt ergab, dass es Platz für die Pflanzung von 1,2 Billionen neuer Bäume gibt − eine Zahl, die mehr Kohlenstoff absorbieren würde als die menschlichen Emissionen verursachen.

Gemäß den neuen Daten, so ETH-Forscher Thomas Crowther gegenüber The Independent, sind Bäume „unsere stärkste Waffe im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel“.

Growther sagte dem Independent, dass die neue Analyse darauf hinweist, dass eine weltweite Baumpflanzaktion einen größeren Einfluss auf die Umwelt des Planeten haben würde als der Bau von Windturbinen oder vegetarische Ernährung − eine Anstrengung, sagt er, die ein Jahrzehnt der Treibhausgasemissionen zunichte machen könnte.

„Derzeit gibt es 3 Billionen Bäume auf der Erde, die rund 400 Gigatonnen CO2 einfangen können. Vom Platz her wäre es leicht möglich, eine weitere Billion Bäume zu pflanzen, die dann abermals Hunderte von Gigatonnen Kohlendioxid aus der Atmosphäre einfangen könnte. Somit sind es mindestens 10 Jahre anthropogener Emissionen, die vollständig ausgelöscht werden könnten“, sagte er der Zeitung.

Bäume sind schön und außerordentlich nützlich

Im Gegensatz zu High-Tech-Lösungen für den Klimawandel wie Kohlenstoffabscheidung, argumentierte Crowther, seien Bäume schön. Außerdem kann jeder einen pflanzen.

„Es ist eine schöne Sache, weil sich jeder einbringen kann“, sagte er gegenüber The Independent. „Bäume machen die Menschen in städtischen Umgebungen glücklicher, sie verbessern die Luftqualität, die Wasserqualität, die Qualität der Lebensmittel, den Service des Ökosystems, es ist eine so einfache, greifbare Sache“.
