Ob AW-Energy, ein finnischer Entwickler, das in Schweden ansässige Unternehmen CorPower Ocean, Ocean Power Technologies aus New Jersey oder Wave Energy in Schottland …. sie alle sind dabei, Wellenenergie-Umwandler auf den Markt zu bringen. Das Niveau der vorkommerziellen Aktivitäten dieser Unternehmen sowie Entwicklungen wie die Inbetriebnahme der PacWave-Testanlage im Juni durch die Oregon State University deuten darauf hin, dass der viel gepriesene Wellenenergiesektor trotz seiner vielen Rückschläge immer noch vielversprechend ist.

Die Wellenenergie ist seit langem Teil einer Gruppe von Technologien − darunter Gezeitenströmungsturbinen und kleine modulare Reaktoren −, von denen die Befürworter sagen, dass sie sich zu wichtigen Energiequellen entwickeln könnten, die aber auf ewig an der Schwelle zur Kommerzialisierung zu stehen scheinen.

Ein oft mühsamer Zertifizierungsprozess kommt zu einer jahrelangen Technologieentwicklung hinzu. Mit anderen Worten: Wellenenergie ist kein Sektor für Ungeduldige. Die PowerBuoy-Technologie von Ocean Power Technologies wird seit 1997 getestet. AW-Energy wurde 2003 gegründet, und CorPower gibt es seit 2009.
