Allein in Großbritannien haben die Daten von Strava für das Jahr 2020 gezeigt, dass „aktives Reisen“ im Jahr 2020 um 162% zugenommen hat. London allein konnte von Mai 2019 bis Mai 2020 einen Anstieg von fast 120% verzeichnen, da die Menschen wieder mehr auf das Fahrrad umstiegen, um von A nach B zu gelangen.
Und die britischen Städte sind mit diesem Trend nicht allein. Die Daten zeigen einen ähnlichen Anstieg in Städten auf der ganzen Welt, einschließlich Berlin, New York und Barcelona, die einen Anstieg von 76%, 34% bzw. 32% im Vergleich zum Vorjahr verzeichneten.

Diese Pläne sind natürlich zu begrüßen. Entscheidend ist aber, dass die investierten Gelder am richtigen Ort ankommen. Dafür benötigen Stadtplaner Angaben zu den genauen Orten, an denen Radwege hinzugefügt, neu gestaltet, verlängert oder verkürzt werden sollten.
Umstieg aufs Fahrrad boomt
In Deutschland zum Beispiel verzeichnete die Hauptstadt Berlin den größten Anstieg an Radfahrern. Die Zahl stieg seit Mai 2019 um 76%. Und die gestiegene Nachfrage stieß auf große öffentliche und staatliche Unterstützung, denn im April wurde in der Petersburger Straße ein breiterer Fahrradweg eingerichtet, um diesem Boom während der Pandemie gerecht zu werden. Das führte zu einem Anstieg von 269,23% an Radfahrern auf diesem Straßenabschnitt zwischen Januar und Juli 2020.
Auch New York verzeichnete während der Pandemie einen Anstieg des Radverkehrs. Die 34th Avenue in Queens verzeichnete von Januar bis Juli 2020 mit über 1220% den größten Sprung in der Stadt, nachdem der Autoverkehr während der Pandemie von der Straße abgeschnitten worden war. Und es gibt einen klaren Appetit darauf, diese Veränderung dauerhaft umzusetzen, was den Gemeinderat und das US-Verkehrsministerium dazu drängte, in Erwägung zu ziehen, diese Straße zu einer autofreien Straße zu machen.
Die Londoner Park Lane ist ein weiterer Beweis dafür, dass die Einführung von Radwegen in traditionell überlasteten Gebieten zu einem Anstieg der Nachfrage führen wird. So wurde ein Anstieg des Radverkehrs um 448% von Januar bis Juli dieses Jahres auf einer der am stärksten befahrenen Straßen im Zentrum Londons verzeichnet, die jetzt auch über einen Radweg verfügt.
Hier besteht ein klarer und offensichtlicher Zusammenhang. Radwege ermutigen die Menschen, auf das Fahrrad aufzuspringen. Daher wäre es gut, diesem Schwung entsprechend in eine intelligente Infrastruktur zu investieren.

Die globale Pandemie hat deutlich gemacht, dass aktives Reisen der Weg in die Zukunft ist, aber nur, wenn wir uns dafür entscheiden, das voll und ganz umzusetzen.
Wenn wir diesen Trend nutzen und sicherstellen, dass er auch nach dem Ende von COVID-19 anhält, werden wir einen langen Weg zu einer nachhaltigeren und grüneren Zukunft zurücklegen. Diese schließt gesündere Gewohnheiten ein und stellt den Menschen − und nicht das Auto − in den Mittelpunkt des Stadtverkehrs.
