In China, wo bereits vor Wochen Hunderte Millionen Menschen unter Quarantäne gestellt wurden, zeigen Vorher-Nachher-Satellitenfotos, wie die Umweltverschmutzung nach dem Stillstand verschwindet. Weltweit fordern Unternehmen Mitarbeiter auf, von zu Hause aus zu arbeiten und Konferenzen abzusagen, die Schulen sind geschlossen und Millionen Menschen werden angehalten, das Haus nicht zu verlassen.
Coronakrise vs. Klimakrise
Diese Maßnahmen erfolgten plötzlich, da es sich um einen Notfall im Bereich der öffentlichen Gesundheit handelt. Das Ausmaß der plötzlichen Veränderungen wirft nun eine andere Frage auf:
Wie würde es aussehen, wenn die Welt mit einem ähnlichen Gefühl der Dringlichkeit auf die Klimakrise reagieren würde? Die Coronavirus-Antwort war möglicherweise nicht so schnell wie sie hätte sein sollen, aber in Ländern auf der ganzen Welt haben Regierungen und Bürger ihre täglichen Gewohnheiten schnell geändert. Doch wir sehen keine angemessenen Maßnahmen.“ Einerseits zeigt die jetzige Situation, dass dies möglich ist und dass diese Art der Mobilisierung von Ressourcen in kurzer Zeit stattfinden kann. Das ist natürlich ermutigend.“ Scheinbar ist es eine Frage des politischen Willens, ob es einen raschen Wandel geben kann oder nicht.
Folgen der Klimakrise
Es gibt Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den Situationen ‒ in beiden Fällen zeigt die wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaft klar auf, was zu tun ist und warnt vor den Folgen. Beide Situationen betreffen die öffentliche Gesundheit. Der Klimawandel tötet bereits Menschen in extremen Hitzewellen und anderen Katastrophen. Es verschlechtert auch die Nahrungsmittel und erhöht Wasserknappheit, was weitere Hunderte Millionen Menschen vertreiben wird. Dieselben Schadstoffe, die stark zum Klimawandel beitragen, verursachen auch Luftverschmutzung, an der jedes Jahr Millionen Menschen sterben. Krankheiten wie Malaria und Dengue-Fieber breiten sich höchstwahrscheinlich auch aus, wenn Mücken in neue Regionen ziehen.
Und wie beim Coronavirus sind Menschen, die in Gebieten mit den geringsten Ressourcen leben, am stärksten vom Klimawandel betroffen. „Der Klimawandel betrifft auch die am stärksten gefährdeten zuerst und am schlimmsten“, sagt Boeve.
Schnelles Handeln auch für das Klima erforderlich
Wenn die Welt auf den Klimawandel wie auf das Coronavirus reagieren würde ‒ mit derselben Dringlichkeit, die die Wissenschaft für notwendig hält ‒, würden die Dinge dramatisch anders aussehen.
Die Regierungen würden die Mittel für den Aufbau der Infrastruktur bereitstellen, die für die vollständige Einführung erneuerbarer Energien erforderlich ist. „Es ist billig genug und verfügbar, aber die Regulierungssysteme, die es Menschen überall ermöglichen würden, saubere Energie zu erhalten, würden massive staatliche Investitionen erfordern“, sagt sie. „Wir würden diese Art von Notfallpaketen sehen, die Menschen aus den „Fängen“ fossiler Brennstoffe befreien und saubere Energie anbieten würden.“
Nach Waldbränden und extremen Überschwemmungen würden Hilfspakete die Rolle des Klimas anerkennen. In Städten würden sich die Entwicklungsregeln ändern, um eine kohlenstoffarme Konstruktion zu erfordern. Die Betriebe würden auf eine regenerative Landwirtschaft umsteigen. So wie die Luftfahrtindustrie wegen des Coronavirus zu kämpfen hat, würden einige Branchen echte Auswirkungen sehen. „Wir hätten wahrscheinlich noch keine Öl-, Kohle- und Gasindustrie, die in unserer Wirtschaft floriert“, sagt Boeve. Wir müssten auch Wege finden, um die Arbeiter aus diesen Branchen zu unterstützen.

Dies liegt zum Teil daran, dass der Klimawandel trotz der wachsenden Zahl klimabedingter Katastrophen, die jedes Jahr auftreten, immer noch ein etwas entferntes Problem zu sein scheint.
