Vom Schiffscontainer zum Swimmingpool?

Einige der unzähligen Schiffscontainer, die auf den Weltmeeren unterwegs sind, sind Einwegcontainer. Sie transportieren ihre Waren nur ein einziges Mal über den Ozean. Das Startup Unternehmen Modpools ermöglicht ihnen nun ein zweites Leben als Swimmingpool.

Seit 2017 verwandelt Paul Rathnam mit seinem in Vancouver ansässigen Unternehmen Schiffscontainer in ganz Kanada und den USA in Pools. Das ist eine Möglichkeit Container, die oft nur einmal nach Übersee transportiert werden und dann unweigerlich im Müll landen würden, wiederzuverwenden.  Die tragbaren Pools sind relativ einfach und effizient zu bauen und zu installieren und können mit einigen luxuriösen Funktionen modifiziert werden.

Zweites Leben für Container aus China

Die Idee entstand nach einigen Urlauben in Kalifornien, so Rathnam. Der langjährige Bau- und Renovierungsspezialist Rathnam verwandelte damals bereits Schiffscontainer in nutzbare Räume, vornehmlich Büroeinheiten. Doch da das meist einmalige Aufträge waren, fehlte die Nachhaltigkeit. Es musste also ein spezifischeres Produkt her.

Rathnam gründete das Unternehmen Modpools und entschied, sich auf Pools zu konzentrieren. Er kaufte Container, die eine einzige Reise über den Pazifik machten und Waren wie Mobiltelefone, Computer und Kleidung von China nach Nordamerika transportierten. Oft werden diese Container nicht retourniert, und wenn doch, fahren sie Tausende von Kilometern völlig leer. „Nordamerika hat China nicht wirklich viel zu schicken“, sagt er, abgesehen von einigen Artikeln wie Sojabohnen und Halbleitern, was u. a. auf das berühmte Handelsdefizit zwischen den USA und China zurückzuführen ist. Auch China will seine Container meist nicht zurück. Daher werden die meisten dieser Container recycelt (einige werden in Büros, Klassenzimmer und sogar Wohnungen umfunktioniert). In einigen Fällen lässt man sie einfach verrosten. „Sie in etwas zu verwandeln, das Sie 30 Jahre lang auf Ihrem Grundstück verwenden können, ist wahrscheinlich die beste Form des Recyclings, die wir tun können“, sagt Rathnam.

Containerpools mit unterschiedlichsten Features

Modpools kauft gezielt Einwegbehälter, damit sie so beulenfrei und sauber wie möglich sind. „Die Schwierigkeit ist, dass die Container wie Müllcontainer aussehen“, meint Rathnam. Vor ein oder zwei Jahrzehnten wäre es schwieriger gewesen, sich zu verkaufen, bemerkt er, aber die Leute sind jetzt aufgeschlossener − sowohl für das Konzept der Wiederverwendung als auch für neue Designs für kleine Räume.

Die Containerpools sind modular aufgebaut: Die 6 x 2,5 Meter oder 12 c 2,5 Meter großen Container werden je nach Bedarf auf die individuelle Form und Größe der jeweiligen Gartenfläche zugeschnitten. Sie können sogar durch Anschweißen von Stahlresten erweitert werden. All dies geschieht in der Fabrik von Modpools, etwa eine Stunde östlich von Vancouver, sodass der Bau im Gegensatz zu traditionellen Heimpools für Familien vor Ort keine Belastung darstellt. Die Pools können dann schnell – in der Regel innerhalb eines Tages – im Boden, oberirdisch oder teilweise oberirdisch installiert werden. Das Unternehmen hat Infinity-Pools entworfen und Fensterelemente an den Seiten der Container hinzugefügt, damit Zuschauer in den Boden sehen können. Eine beliebte Option ist die Pool-Whirlpool-Kombination, mit der Eltern tagsüber mit ihren Kindern schwimmen und sich nachts mit Sprudeln entspannen können.

Wie ein Kurzurlaub daheim

Obwohl sich die Pandemie auf die Lieferung von Schiffscontainern ausgewirkt hat, hat sie Rathnams Geschäft zu seinem bisher größten Wachstumsjahr verholfen. Aufgrund der eingeschränkten Reise- und Ausgehmöglichkeiten verbringen die Menschen mehr Zeit zu Hause – und möchten, dass sich ihr eigener Garten wie ein Kurzurlaub anfühlt.

Und das Gute: Den Containern, die ansonsten vor sich hinrosten und die Landschaft verschmutzen würden, wurde mit dieser Idee ein zweites (schöneres) Leben geschenkt. Nichts wie hinein ins kühle Nass!
