Lassen wir die Wälder doch auf natürliche Weise nachwachsen!

Viel Geld fließt in Baumpflanzinitiativen, aber es gibt eigentlich eine günstigere Lösung: Geben wir den Wäldern einfach den Raum, sich zu regenerieren.

Länder und Unternehmen stecken im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel Geld in das Pflanzen von Bäumen. Doch es gibt eine andere Möglichkeit, Wälder nachwachsen zu lassen, die oft viel weniger Beachtung findet, nämlich wenn Menschen einfach aus dem Weg gehen und nichts tun. In dem Fall kann der natürliche Prozess auch dort ablaufen, wo Bäume bereits abgeholzt wurden. Das Potenzial für ein weltweites Nachwachsen natürlicher Wälder könnte jährlich bis zu 8,9 Milliarden Tonnen Kohlendioxid einfangen, was einem Viertel der vom Menschen verursachten Emissionen der Welt entspricht.

Die Zahlen stammen aus einer Studie, in der das Potenzial dieser Wälder zur Kohlenstoffabscheidung auf der ganzen Welt detailliert dargestellt wird. Wie viel Kohlenstoff jeder Wald speichern kann, variiert je nach Standort um das 100-fache. Vor der Studie gab es nur begrenzte Daten von bestimmten Orten. „Wir haben ein Modell entwickelt, das die Informationen aus diesen verschiedenen Parzellen entnehmen und für andere Orte − ähnlich wie diese − vorhersagen kann, an denen wahrscheinlich dieselben Waldwachstumsraten gelten“, sagt Nancy Harris, Forschungsmanagerin bei Global Forest Watch am World Resources Institut. Das ist eine gemeinnützige Organisation, die mit der Naturschutzbehörde und anderen Organisationen an der Studie zusammengearbeitet hat.

In einigen Fällen war das Potenzial dieser Wälder, Kohlenstoff zu speichern, größer als bisher angenommen − die Zahlen, die Länder beispielsweise für tropische Wälder verwendet haben, unterschätzten ihre Kohlenstoffspeicherung um 50%. Die neue Karte könnte den Ländern helfen, besser für die Zukunft zu planen, indem sie Bereiche identifiziert, die für diese Art von Arbeit priorisiert werden müssen. „Es kann Menschen helfen, herauszufinden, wo es den größten CO2-Nutzen oder die größte CO2-Belohnung für das Nachwachsen von Wäldern gibt“, sagt David Gibbs, ein GIS-Forschungsmitarbeiter am World Resources Institute.
