Cargo Bikes liefern Pakete schneller als Lieferwagen – und schonen dabei die Umwelt

Laut einer in London durchgeführten Studie könnte Ihre Lieferung mit einem Cargo Bike oder Lastenfahrrad anstelle eines Lieferwagens 60 % schneller erfolgen, was sowohl Staus als auch Umweltverschmutzung reduziert.

Mit dem Anstieg des Online-Shoppings wächst auch die Zahl der in erster Spur geparkten Lieferwagen, die den Verkehr in den Städten blockieren und die CO2-Emissionen in die Luft erhöhen. Um sowohl die Umweltverschmutzung als auch die Straßenüberlastung einzudämmen, schlägt ein neuer Bericht vor, dass Logistikunternehmen als Alternative mehr in elektrische Lastenräder investieren sollten. Speziell in Innenstädten ergab die Studie, dass solche Fahrräder 60 % schneller als Lieferwagen liefern können und auch im Vergleich zu elektrischen Lieferwagen eine geringere CO2-Bilanz aufweisen.

Cargo Bikes für den städtischen Güterverkehr

Der Bericht, der Teil eines in Großbritannien durchgeführten Projekts namens Car Free Megacities ist, wurde durch die wachsende Zahl von Lieferwagen auf den Straßen angetrieben. Genau dieser Trend wurde während der Pandemie noch einmal verstärkt. In Großbritannien hat sich die Anzahl der gefahrenen Kilometer von Lieferwagen in den letzten 25 Jahren verdoppelt, was zu Luftverschmutzung und Unfällen mit tödlichen Folgen für Fußgänger beigetragen hat. „Wir hielten es für wichtig, nach Alternativen zu diesem schädlichen Modell des städtischen Güterverkehrs zu suchen“, sagt Ersilia Verlinghieri, wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Active Travel Academy der University of Westminster und Hauptautorin des Berichts.

Mit Hilfe von GPS-Daten von Pedal Me, einem Cargo Bike Unternehmen, das im Zentrum Londons Lieferungen durchführt, berechneten die Forscher, wie lange ein Lieferwagen für die gleichen Fahrten benötigt hätte, und berücksichtigten dabei Unterschiede in Geschwindigkeit, Nutzlastkapazität und Entladezeit. Da Lastenfahrräder leichter durch den dichten Verkehr fahren, Abkürzungen auf Straßen nehmen können, die für den Autoverkehr gesperrt sind, und weniger Zeit mit der Suche nach Parkplätzen verbringen, ergab der Bericht, dass sie Lieferungen schneller durchführen können.

Weniger Zeit für die Parkplatzsuche bedeutet jedoch nicht immer, dass mehr Pakete bis vor die Haustüre gelangen. Als UPS elektrische Lastenfahrräder in der Innenstadt von Seattle testete, ergab eine Studie des Urban Freight Lab der University of Washington, dass LKW-Fahrer, obwohl sie jeden Tag etwa 50 Minuten mit der Parkplatzsuche verbrachten, mehr Pakete ausliefern konnten als Lastenfahrräder auf derselben Route. Die Fahrräder können nur rund 20% bis 25% der per LKW gelieferten Pakete liefern. Der Pilotversuch fand hier allerdings zu einer Zeit statt, als die Fahrer einen zusätzlichen Helfer hatten, um ihre Lieferungen schneller an die Frau/den Mann bringen zu können. Das Urban Freight Lab arbeitet nun mit mehr Unternehmen zusammen, um einen Lieferknotenpunkt in der Nachbarschaft zu untersuchen und mehr Daten über die Effizienz der Nutzung von Lastenrädern zusammen mit Schließfächern zu sammeln, mit denen Kunden Pakete selbst abholen können.

Gute Fahrradinfrastruktur unumgänglich

Ob eine Stadt über ein gutes Radwegenetz verfügt oder nicht, wird sich auch darauf auswirken, wie gut Cargo Bikes funktionieren können. „Eine gute Fahrradinfrastruktur ist entscheidend, damit Lastenfahrräder ihre Waren sicher und schnell an verschiedene Ziele liefern können“, sagt Verlinghieri. Regierungen können auch mehr tun, um das Wachstum von Lastenfahrrädern zu fördern, einschließlich Subventionen für Fahrräder und reduzierte Steuern auf ihren Betrieb, Unterstützung für Infrastruktur wie Ladestationen und Umweltzonen, die von der Nutzung anderer Fahrzeuge abhalten.

Da Amazon, FedEx und andere Lieferunternehmen mehr elektrische Lieferwagen auf den Markt bringen möchten, um ihren CO2-Fußabdruck zu senken, könnten Cargo Bikes hier einen noch größeren Beitrag leisten. Auch wenn Elektro-Lkws vollständig mit erneuerbarem Strom betrieben werden, haben die Fahrzeuge bei der Herstellung immer noch eine größere Umweltbelastung als Fahrräder.
